Though Francisco Fernandez de Cordoba originally founded Leon in 1524 at the foot of Mombotombo Volcano, the city moved 20km towards northwest due to fear of destruction of the city by earthquakes and volcanic eruption in 1609. Leon has a turbulent history due to the rivalry between the city’s liberals with the conservatives of Granada and there were several battles between them. The martyr poet Rigoberto Lopez Perez gunned down the then president Somoza in 1956 in Leon. Nicaragua politics is mostly heated up by the student community of National University, Leon. It has also been home to many thinkers and patriotic politicians. The buildings of the streets of Leon still have the bullet-marks as reminders of the revolutions of 1970s. Many prominent political leaders come from Leon Nicaragua or had their start here. 
Today the main attraction of Leon is the biggest Cathedral of Central America, Cathedral San Pedro, and another eighteen churches offering a rich spectrum of architectural styles, predominantly of Spanish architecture. You can also find Spanish ammunition fortress and landmark Casa de los Leones or a stone carving of two lion heads. Leon remained the capital of the nation for a few years and the tussle between the conservatives of Granada and Liberals of Leon caused shifting of Nicaragua capital between the two cities. Finally in 1858, capital Nicaragua was fixed as Managua. Leon Nicaragua is also the rail and commercial link between capital Managua and the major city Corinto.
