San Juan Howler MTB Race Course Designer Finds Course is King, Collaboration Key
San Juan Howler Designer Thinks Course is Great, and Collaboration Important
MTB Race - How do you feel about designing San Juan Howler's mountain bike racecourse? According to the superb world-racer and course designer, Anthony Ippolito, the Howler terrain is quite wonderful and has enormous capability. The present routes are pretty good. More, and much better flowing, trails can be constructed. In addition, the community is truly supportive. Folks were eager for the event to be a reality and offered support of varied kinds. And that's that--Working together is the how the creation of the San Juan Hower, mountain bike course found its way to creation. Anthony has competed in both the American and world 24-hour solo championships many times.
How does it feel to race Howler? "The climbs get me every time, as being from the Midwest, where longer steep climbs are rare" replied Anthony. MTB race - As a skilled and experienced rider -- both technical riding and downhill riding -- I have a fantastic time on both the intense downhills and the areas of the trail that require more technical skill. The Howler Course: How It Was Crafted
(1) Incorporating the landscape characteristics According to Anthony, the challenge in this course lies in incorporating elements like ridges, streambeds, rocks and other obstacles while making sure the course is not too difficult for any level of accomplishment.
2) Allowing the Flow to Happen. Without putting too much detailed thought into it but feeling the course. Anthony visualizes the trail and feels the terrain. MTB race - This helps to ensure one element of the course does not over power another. Like no ascent for 10K, followed by a descent for the next leg till the finish. He tells us that the course should be a mix of many different terrains to give riders the opportunity to use a variety of skills. And at the same time be in unison with mother nature.
3) In terms of a challenge, Anthony tries to avoid emphasizing a specific type of rider skill. For instance, racers who are skilled at climbing have the edge on a track with stretches of dirt road ascents. Great technical skills are required to navigate a course laden with fallen trees and rocks galore. He explains that he varies the course to avoid giving any kind of rider an edge.
To Central America, Howler is Unique.
