Banking Requirements Nicaragua, - The Banking System of Nicaragua has managed to purify itself and strengthen after the bank crisis of 2000-2001. Considered the costliest in the history of the country. Though on general level the banks places its resources in sectors dominated by the consumption more that in the production. Every institution has its niche of market according to its priorities.


A few years have passed since Nicaragua faced its worse financial crisis that cost more than 500 million dollars, with the bankruptcy of seven private and state banks. Now the sector has managed to put its best foot forward and now considered the most dynamical sector of the national economy.


The National banking system employs 4,669 persons. Has 210 branches through out the country. 102 are located in Managua. The remaining 108 are primarily in the Pacific, Center and North regions, according to Banco Central of Nicaragua (BCN).


The Nicaraguan banking system is composed by seven banks:

· Banpro (Banco de la Producción)

· Bancentro (Bank of Central American Credit)

· BAC (Bank of Central America)

· BDF (Bank of Finance)

· Banco Uno

· Banistmo

· ProCredit

That as a whole add assets for US$2.289 billion in 2004 and of which, 72 % is controlled by three major banks: BanPro, Bancentro and BAC.


The hours of operation for the majority of branches is:


Monday until Friday of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Saturday of 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 m.


You can readily access your cash at home through the banks. All accept debit cards and will make cash advances on your credit card. The major credit cards accepted are Visa and Master Card and sometimes American Express. Several of the branches also have the automatic tellers available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Generally you are able to get either Córdobas or US dollars. Ensure you have your passport with you as one of the first banking requirements Nicaragua.


Many stores are now taking credit cards but a number of small businesses only accept cash. It is recommended you always carry a small supply of small denomination bills as change at times may not be readily available.


The Córdoba is the official currency of the country. American dollars are also used. It is difficult to exchange other currencies. Generally if you are able to it is at a tremendous discount. Therefore you are advised to obtain either the Córdoba or the American dollar in bills in low denominations prior to entering the country. Euros can change into Bancentro or into the Bank of Finance and generally only in the major centers.


You can generally exchange currency at the Cambio in the airport, major hotels and the banks. You will find money changers on the street, however, you may or may not get the correct exchange rate. Forsafety it is suggested you use the banks.

  6. Certification of Record of the current Management together with minutes of the Meeting requesting account opening.

  7. Power or certification of record of the Director’s Meeting designating the legal representative.

  8. Format Profile of the Client.

  9. Format Information of the Signatory for the company and original documents of identification of the signatories.

  10. Document of Identification:

a) Nicaraguans:

Bond (Certificate) of original Identity.

b) Foreigner with Residency:

Passport and Bond (Certificate) of In force Residence.

c) Foreigner without Residenency:

Passport with current working visa and witness with residency or witness of the Organization or company to which he provides services to.

b) Certificate of Registration of the Syndication, Federation or Union.

a) Presidential agreement of the appointment of the Minister or President of the Entity.
