Words to Live from 2009 La Ruta de los Conquistadores Champion

Important Lesson of the '09 La Ruta de los Conquistadores

Dream, act and never give up!
Be kind to others as everyone is fighting a hard battle.

La Ruta 2011

29-year old Manuel Manny Prado, at the high point of his career, is his country’s 2009 Ruta champion. However, Manny is totally unmoved by having won the world’s most difficult mountain biking race. He is full of humility and grace, always supporting others to perform well.

The Manny Prado story,

Conquistadores - Begins on a Costa Rican farm in a hot and humid pineapple field and ends in the taking of a position in one of the top ten pro-elite rankings of American mountain bike racers, is truly inspirational. As a 12-year-old, Manny received a Christmas present from his mother. Manny, driven by the urge to escape a poor and crime-filled neighborhood, trained with all his will and energy for the national BMX freestyle competition. Manny was the champion from 1997 through 1999 in Costa Rica's BMX events, beginning at the tender age of 16. He had dreams of achieving a rank as one among the top twenty in ESPN’s X-Games extreme sports as well.

And so, Manny ended up as a farm laborer, working his fingers to the bone at a Del Monte pineapple farm for little more than $65.00 per week. In just nine months, and while helping his mother provide for their family, Manny saved $2,000, which was literally the price of his ticket to fame, fortune and freedom.

He is now living in San Francisco. Manny became the number one USA BMX amateur in 2002. Manny realized another milestone in 2003 when he came in 14 out of 20 in the X-Games. Conquistadores - It took long time for him to get used to larger bikes before he started MTB. Winning the race was not a sudden thing either. He made up his mind not to surrender. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Current Manny Prado Story

Champions do not take anything for granted, in spite of their talent. Working hard and lots of practice is the secret. No matter what things look like out there you should keep on going. More important still is being strong of mind. Manny is certain that he has achieved so much because he devotes himself completely to his project, and never succumbs to self-doubt.

Manny's hopes and dreams finally came full circle. He had a goal to beat La Ruta. Manny placed 44th in 2004, but by 2006, he moved up to 13th place. He placed 10th in 2007. Manny accomplished that benchmark goal in '09 when he won La Ruta!

You must first dream, then visualize, then plan - believe - act, in order to accomplish great things. Thereafter, you can share with others how you did it and encourage them to do the same or better. Manny stated that he feels this is the way the world should work.

Always remember that an expensive bike or more money will not bring happiness into your life, but having fun is the most important thing! The way you see and appreciate things depend on your attitude. What, Manny Prado wants to know, makes you smile every morning when you get up?
