2007 El Reto del Quetzal Participant, Guatemala
2006 24-Hour Women’s World MTB Champion

MTB racers are drawn season in and out, from these words of inspiration to continue riding their dreams. In this area, you will find three races of note. Emerging MTB Action - The world’s oldest and most challenging mountain bike race is La Ruta de Los Conquistadores in Costa Rica – a race that even Lance Armstrong declared that he would find difficult to do without training for it. That started in 1993, 17 years ago. El Reto started in 2007 in Guatemala; followed San Juan Howler in 2008 in Nicaragua.

Biking in Central America is like what?

"Susan Haywood" universal professional champion. It was very pleasant to participate in El Reto. This is the optimal way of viewing the country of Guatemala. Apart from having lot of high angle clims in mountains, there are wild dogs and chickens all around, too. I heard that the El Reto course was improved, so I'm anxious to race it again.

Owner of El Gato Negro, San Juan del Sur: "Rob Thomas". The venue for the Howler event is the hot and humid jungle. From the highest point of the racecourse, are awesome views of the coast with views all the way to Costa Rica! This race features varied terrain and soil conditions. There are monsterous climbs Rocky riverbeds, mud holes, and a fast dirt road make for a tough and scary single-track downhill that most riders can’t make it down.  This is an endurance race that requires a wide variety of biking skills because of the challenging conditions, terrain and the tremendous distance covered. Quick Fact: Expert riders will climb over 8 miles through the steep elevation changes.

El Gato Negro Bookstore and Coffeehouse, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua Note: One of the San Juan Howler sponsors in this race is El Gato Negro. Rob and Kelly have been serving great food at their cafe/English bookstore in Nicaragua since 2005. Emerging MTB Action - People and horses do all the work in harvesting the organic coffee: only the final phase, skin removal, is automated. This rich brew gets great reviews for this very reason.
