For those poor souls who had trouble with geography in their school years. I should say for those that have been too busy to remember their geography from their school years, here is a quick summary on Facts Nicaragua. You see we where dumb founded by the number of people in North America who did not know where Nicaragua was.

Located in the heart of Central America, Republic of Nicaragua became an independent state in 1821. It is the most sparsely populated state among the Central American nations. The majority of the population live on the Pacific Coast with Managua containing approximately 1 million population.

Nicaragua is bounded by Honduras in the north, Costa Rica in the south, North Pacific Ocean in the west, and Caribbean Sea in the east. Nicaragua has a coastal line of 910 km. Nicaragua has a tropical climate in highlands and cooler climate in highlands. Terrain consists of coastal plains and mountains. Volcanic mountains dot the coastal plain on the pacific side. Nicaragua is also the largest country in Central America. The largest fresh water body in Central America is Lago de Nicaragua.

The principal source of national income is agriculture and has around 900 sq km of irrigated land. Cotton, coffee, sugarcane, rice, bananas, maize and fruit are the major agricultural products. Around 15% of the land is arable and permanent crops occupy 2% of the land. Timber trade and fishing are the other important source of income. Zinc, lead, tungsten, copper, silver and gold are the major natural resources. Food processing, chemicals, matches, leather, beer and plastic goods are the most important industries. Soil erosion, water pollution and deforestation are some the major environmental issues.

The population growth rate in facts Nicaragua is around 2% and around 60% of the population comes between the age group of 15 to 65. Literacy rate is around 68%. The country has a birthrate of around 25 per 1000 person and the death rate is around 5 per 1000 person. The infant mortality rate is around 30 deaths per 1000 person. Life expectancy at birth is around 71 years. The HIV prevalence rate is around 0.2%. People living with HIV are around 6,400.

The country is divided into 15 administrative units and Atlantico Norte and Sur are autonomous regions. The government type is republic and those above the age of 16 can part take in voting. Civil law system is the legal system followed.
