The Government Of Nicaragua - Nicaragua has a democratic government. The president is the chief of state and the head of the government. The current president is Jose Daniel Ortega Saavedra, and the vice-president is Jaime Morales Carazo. They took office on January 10, 2007. The president and the vice-president are chosen once every five years by popular vote, and the next presidential election will be November 06, 2011. The president chooses a cabinet of ministers for the government of Nicaragua.

Nicaragua has a unicameral National Assembly, popularly called Asamblea Nacional. The total number of members in the assembly is 92. The members are elected by proportional representation. Each member is entitled to serve a five-year term. One seat in the National Assembly is reserved for the previous president and one seat for the person who came second in the previous presidential election.

Supreme Court is the highest judicial authority in the country. Popularly known as Corte Suprema. The Supreme Court is comprised of 16 judges. The National Assembly elects the judges for a five-year term.

In the government of Nicaragua the popular political parties include Sandinista National Liberation Front or FSLN, Central American Unionist Party or PUCA, Independent Liberal Party for National Unity or PLIUN, New Liberal Party or PALI and Liberal Constitutional Party or PLC. One of the important pressure group in the country is the National Workers Front or FNT. It is a group eight labor unions and has strong backing of Sandinistas.

The flag of Nicaragua consists of three equal horizontal bands. The top and bottom are in blue color and the middle is in white color. National coat of arms is centered in the white band. The coat of arms has a triangle encircled by the words REPUBLICA DE NICARAGUA on the top. AMERICA CENTRAL is written on the bottom of the coat.

Government of Nicaragua highlights Freedom of Speech and no state censorship as fundlementals of the Nicaraguan constitution. The constitution also provides freedom of movement within the country, foreign travel, emigration, and repatriation. Freedom of religion and peaceful assembly and association are the other important features of the constitution. Discrimination on the basis of birth, political belief, race, gender, language, religion, opinion, and economic and social condition is strictly prohibited by the constitution.
