Lake Nicaragua - Look Inside To Discover An Adventure Into History!
Lake Nicaragua (or Lake Cocibolka), the tenth largest fresh water lake in the world and second largest in Central America is noted for the presence of some 350 large islands and salt-water fauna like tuna and sharks. The presence of such saltwater animals can be attributed to the rise of landmass that separated the lake from the Caribbean Sea in the prehistoric times. The inhabitants of this land call Lake Nicaragua as the Sweet Sea. There are islands, waves and powerful storms and the only thing missing is salt. River San Juan connects Lake Nicaragua with Caribbean Sea and an inter-oceanic canal like Panama Canal is proposed.

At the center of lake Nicaragua is an active Volcano named Concepcion and another inactive one, Madera. Lava from the two volcanoes merged them into an island mountain with two peaks and hence the name Ometepe for the island. The island hosts some nice stone statues made by native tribal people many centuries ago. A trekking through the lush forests with many wild animals can give you a glimpse of the ancient tombs and artifacts of natives who were settled here in the distant past. Although you can find taxies in the islands of lake Nicaragua, the life here is naturally primitive and people support their living by fishing and agriculture that chiefly produce banana, coffee, tobacco, wheat, sesame etc. As a tourist, you can either stay in Moyogalpa or Altagracia or can hire a ferry to take you to Santo Domingo Beach, which is just two hours away.
