Matagalpa Nicaragua " The Pearl of the Septentrión "
originally founded by the Chibcha Indians northern South America. In 1538 the Spanish created the small town of Matagalpa by merging three native towns Solingalpa, Molagüina y Pueblo Grande or Matagalpa. Historians say Matagalpa, from the language nahuatl means "town entangled". Matagalpa was provisional capital of Nicaragua between 1855 and 1856, when the filibusters of William Walker were defeated in the ranch San Jacinto and constituted the government legislation at the expense of the provisional president,
The department of Matagalpa is located 65 km north of Managua. At an elevation 3,000 feet above sea level the region enjoys a climate fresher than the rest of the country. Its many rivers, small lakes and fertile soil it is one of the most productive departments of the country. It is the premier coffee region for Nicaragua plus enjoys a great diversity of products: rice, corn, flowers and varied vegetables, and cattle.
The city of Matagalpa is located to 130 km north of the capital with a population of 200,000 at a density of 312,18 hab/km2. It is only accessible by road crossing the Darien Mountains. Here you will find a variety of hotels, bars, restaurants, private clinics, hospitals, discotheques, internet cafes, universities, car rentals, craft shops and countless other amenities. The principal attraction of Matagalpa Nicaragua is its ecotourism - the reserves of Cerro Musún, El Arenal or the private reserve Selva Negra. There is agri-tourism, adventure tourism with white water rafting. You can go hinking and to explore the abundant and varied flora and fauna.
Matagalpa Nicaragua offers many historical sites and artifacts to examine and enjoy from the colonial church of Molagüina (prior to San Philip, 1688) to cave paintings in Moloas's gully, to the old site of La Lima near San Ramón, the first coffee estate. Or you can listen to the polkas and mazurkas in Samulalí and Piedra de Agua. Or visit the birth place of Ruben Dario (1867-1916), in the City of Dario. In September, Matagalpa takes advantage of her freshness to celebrate the "Fair of the Güipil, Polka and Muzurka" and the "Fair of the Coffee". A great time to enjoy the hotels of mountain, near Matagalpa's city, with walks in the virgin jungle, rides, observe over 200 species of birds, orchids (85 classified varieties), to take the tour of the coffee or just rest in your cabin, or visit the small museum of coffee in Selva Negra, (former estate of coffee at kilometre 139 on Matagalpa-Jinotega highway).
To travel to Matagalpa by bus from Managua, catch the Bus Station at the Mercado Mayoreo. If you are traveling in your own vehicle, take the Carretera Norte to Sébaco, and then to Matagalpa.For the Spanish verison of Matagalpa click here.
