Mountain Biking Tips - San Juan Howler Transcends Challenges with Mind-Body-Spirit

"I’ve had to ride many races coming out of the winter cold into a warmer climate. Mountain biking tips - For a rider used to temperate climates, the weather at the Howler can be an intense challenge."

Howler Course Designer Anthony Ippolito;
elite world-racer; owner of Southern Brazil Adventures

San Juan Howler challenging Mind Body and Soul

Mountain biking tips - The course seems daunting, particularly the descent from the freezing cold in high altitudes down to the summery heat of San Juan del Sur, but people shouldn't let this keep them from participating. Instead it is an invitation to participate in mountain biking anywhere in the world just by using mind-body-spirit determination.

Anthony Ippolio's main desire is to mountain bike and he certainly loves beating the odds. He’s competed in World Solo 24-Hour Championships and US Solo 24-Hour National Championships numerous times for each mountain bike ultra. The following recommendations from this Chicago native will help you get ready for Howler and enjoy the process.

Anthony Ippolito’s 5 Tips for Biking Howler Successfully
I am Catching You my cycling training is paying off!
1) Go out more slowly. "At the beginning take a bit of time off, to have more in your tank during the last half of the race and you don’t blow up sooner. Many riders have imploded by pushing things to far at the start of high temperature races.

2) The strategy of tanking up. According to Anthony's plan, he won't eat before Howler does. Because the race is short in duration, it is unnecessary to eat a heavy meal beforehand. Solid food does not allow easy digestion when when it is really hot. Mountain biking tips - You want your body to burn its reserves first, before you take the energy gels, so I don't usually start taking them until an hour or so into the race. Calories should be reduced as too much intake causes stomach problems.”

3) Caloric strategy. "You should only consume 250 to 300 calories per hour," Anthonysuggests. Why, because, "the body can’t assimilate more than that in an hour. He points out that excess of it causes stomach bloating, leading to nausea and dehydration; and not even water will get through.

4) Water strategy. Anthony suggests about 25 ounces an hour, more if it’s very hot. He says: "Normally under these conditions, Electrolyte tablets are critical for the body to function" , adding, "The tablet or drink should at least have potassium, calcium and sodium". You are sure to get a muscle cramp unless you take them and also consume twenty five ounces of water every hour.

5) Race day success reflects your training. Train with the same energy gels for race day. "Make sure you use the same item when you race as you did in training." That is perfect route for doom. Another mistake that people often make is eating too many calories while racing. Mountain biking tips - Train at all heart rate zones, too, as you’ll use all of them.
