Newspaper Nicaragua - Quick and Easy!
Newspaper Nicaragua has often had political affiliations and was either highly critical of the existing government or supported the government whole heartedly. Two of the important dailies in Nicaragua are La Prensa and El Nuevo Diario. Spanish is the language used in the popular dailies of the country. The origin of most of the print media in Nicaragua can be traced back to the political groups that ruled the country.
La Prensa
was founded in 1926 and was highly critical of the Somozas. Those close to Somoza government assassinated Pedro Chamorro, the editor of La Prensa in 1978. La Prensa was also critical of the Sandinistas and the policies of Daniel Ortega. This often led to the curtailment of press freedom and demonstrations in favor and against La Prensa often turned violent. During the rule of Sandinistas, the newspaper was also shut down temporarily. The newspaper is also often accused of being close to the United States. Today with newspaper Nicaragua, La Prensa, is considered an independent voice and has a large circulation. The newspaper also has an online edition.
El Nuevo
another popular newspaper Nicaragua daily, was found in 1980 by Xavier Chamorro Cardenal. It is widely considered as pro-Sandinista. It has a wide acceptance through out the country and is noted for its strong positions. El Nuevo Diario has an online edition and is brought out in Spanish.
Confidencial

Between the Waves
is the largest circulating travel magazine and is the only English magazine in Nicaragua. Tourists, foreigners living in Nicaragua, businessmen and international companies are the main subscribers of Between the Waves. The magazine has a quarterly readership of around 20,000 and is found throughout the country. Investment and travel and tourism are the main content in Between the Waves. It provides all the current and basic information on Nicaragua. It also covers local news and current affairs. Destination profiles and stories of adventure take up the space in travel section. It also provides relevant information on local climate and environment. Since most of the dailies in Nicaragua are published in Spanish, Between the Waves is a welcome relief for those who do not know Spanish.
Del Sur
- here I am a bit prejudice. Simply because I know the people involved. They put together this little bi-monthly newsletter for the locals in San Juan. Well that is a bit of a lie. It is actually for anyone who wants to enjoy small town life. Written in both Spanish and English it gives us all an opportunity to learn the language we are not really great at. Not to mention the laughs at ourselves! If you really want to find out about the little town of San Juan del Sur it is a fun read.
