The Simple Nicaragua Travel Guide
Nicaragua Travel Guide - Entry visa is not required for citizens of most of the countries in Europe, North America and South America to enter Nicaragua. Only a tourist card costing US $5 is needed. Tourists need to have a passport that will be valid for at least six months on entering Nicaragua. All tourists leaving the country should pay an airport tax of US $20. Tourists from Afghanistan, Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, India, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Nepal, Pakistan, People's Republic of China, People's Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Vietnam, Yugoslavia and several other African and Asian countries need a valid visa to enter Nicaragua. A Nicaragua travel guide says certain items can be brought to Nicaragua without paying any custom fee. Duty free items include 200 cigarettes, three liter of alcoholic beverage, three small bottles or one large bottle of perfume. In order to carry firearms license is required. Leather, dairy products, canned meat fall under restricted imports. Artifacts of historic value, archeological objects and gold cannot be exported and possessing these articles can lead to jail term. Nicaragua travel guide has numerous airports catering to civilian usage. But only the Augusto Cesar Sandino airport in Managua is fully equipped. Domestic flights operate between Managua, Bluefields, Puerto Cabezas and the Corn Islands. Transportation between cities is better done through bus or car. Local bus services are regular but over crowded and come with all the difficulties in a developing country, including pick pocketing. Certain places on the Caribbean coast can be accessed only through boats. The medical sector in Nicaragua consists of public, privately run hospitals and independently run clinics. Many folks get scared when they think of medical attention in third world countries. And from what I have seen I do not blame them. In Nicaragua travel guide yourself, you do want to be careful on where you decide to require medical attention. :):) That being said I can also vouch for some very top quality medical facilities, services and professionals. Coming from Canada and a country that prides itself of great medical care and service, if I had my choice of being in Canada or Nicaragua when I needed medical care I would pick Nicaragua for anything except the extremely serious. And that I would be getting several opinions prior to making that decision. We left Canada in 2004. Not that long ago. At that time, you did not know how long you would have to wait to get an MRI or elective surgery. Here all you have to do is phone and within the week if not sooner you are in. The cost - much less. Here is a link to the newest addition to hospitals in Nicaragua -
Vivian Pellas Hospital.
A little side note. When we moved down here in June of 2004 there was a young lady taking Spanish lessons with us in a little coastal town of San Juan del Sur, near the Costa Rica border on the Pacific. Well as with most young people with the weekends being what they are and the surf to absolutely die for she went surfing. Unfortunately she had a minor accident and knocked her two front teeth off half way up. That was Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening she visited the local dentist - Dr. Sanchez. Dr. Sanchez was able to fix her teeth to the point where you could not notice they had been injured. When I told a dentist friend of mine from Canada the charges for such a visit at 9:30 on Saturday night - he said he would not pick up the phone for that price.

Apart from local cuisines, Italian, French and Chinese dishes are found in restaurants throughout the country. Popular foods in United States are readily available. So are bottled drinks. It is better to avoid ice and fruit drinks as the water used can be contaminated. Local beers and rum are plentiful. Most big cities have nightlife with nightclubs and live music.
