San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua Progress or Misery?
San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua, - This afternoon I walked to the jetty with a thousand things on my mind. The sun almost hidden, displayed the last rays on the serenity of the sea. As I walked, I listened to the sound of the swaying waves... In following minutes I could see how my small hometown had changed... I closed my eyes for a few moments and suddenly a strange feeling wrapped me in sadness... Seven years ago, I knew more or less all of the people… Today is so different. People come and go. A new business flourishes each week… San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua was transformed into “The Capital” of the investors of real estate.

Copyright - Dan Polley - 2006But they say this is the price of progress. In spite of having difficulty in accepting the consequences, I should recognize that there are good things as well. We have learned to benefit from these changes and have had to adapt to our new situation. I cannot deny that even we have learned from the other cultures. Nevertheless, these lights also harbour shadows. I remember when I was a boy. In the late afternoon scores of fishermen and longshoremen of the port, passed my street as they returned to their homes tired, but happy carrying the fruit of their work... With the passing years, they return later, sad under the orange sun of the tropic. The merchant ships no longer anchor in the harbour... now only memories of the old San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua. So many things have changed in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua. It is not that the changes are bad. But it hurts me to see how gradually this community and its society continues to lose its authenticity, its identity... The fact is, there is a matter of a new crossbreeding. This time not one imposed by conquerors with the sword and the cross. But a crossbreeding sought with “the capital in the hand”, by need, by ambition or for whatever reason... but a lot has changed. I look at back and I ask myself: “Where is that Nicaragua of long ago? ”- Although not easy to recognize, tourism has brought progress, infrastructure and work. But it has also brought insecurity to us, the marginalization of the illiterate and of the dispossessed, the exploitation of our wealth that include not only resources... which stop being ours... and the international community says to the less creative Nicas... “Please Gentlemen!”
We live in a country where “one must do magic to work”. Where the daily purpose is summarized to manage less then twenty cordobas ($1.15US at the time of this writing) to eat a dish of beans… Hardly anybody harbours hopes in the future... what ironies has life! – We live in the place where the goods and services (generally everything) are more expensive... Nevertheless today, the average Sanjuaneño is not capable of buying land, with one year’s salary... This reminds me of a book by Henry George.. “Progress and Misery”
